　　　　电影讲述了一个鲜为人知的故事。1933 年，一位野心勃勃的威尔士年轻记者加雷斯·琼斯（Gareth Jones）来到苏联旅行，发现了共产主义乌托邦神话后骇人听闻的现实。由此他开始进行一项常规新闻调查，但试图在政府掩盖下挖掘乌克兰饥荒的真相很快变成了生死攸关的探索。                                        他的努力不仅受到苏联审查机关的挫败，而且受到对斯大林政权抱有好感的西方记者的阻挠，这其中最有名的就是时任《纽约时报》莫斯科分部的总编辑沃特·杜兰蒂（Walter Duranty）。                                        在现实生活中，琼斯是第一个在西方媒体报道苏联 1932-1933 年大饥荒的记者。但由于很多知识分子对苏维埃政权持同情态度，他的报道并不受欢迎。当时隐瞒了大饥荒事实的杜兰蒂也在此后招致批评，他因对苏联的持续报道而获得的普利策奖也被《纽约时报》称为是“我们为之感到惭愧但可以做出解释”（Guilty With an Explanation）的一个奖项。
